Pagan Pride Day 1999

The 1999 event consisted of a picnic, a line of vendors, a drum circle, a section for children, and a large (125 person) Mabon Ritual on the lawn of the Westwood Federal building. At it's height the event attracted 150 people. A silent auction was held to recover the costs of the event, which it did, plus a couple hundred dollars that became a deposit on the location of the 2000 event. The children's events were a big hit with the children. The children also enjoyed casting the circle for ritual.

Press coverage was positive. A reporter and photographer from the Westsider local newspaper (a publication of Los Angeles independent newspapers) attended. The reporter, Lawrence Ross, interviewed Brian (one of the Pagan Pride coordinators), Pat Devin of the Goddess 2000 project and others. The article is not in their website archives anymore but you can read it here.

Aside from the silent auction, the event also had a food drive. In the end we donated three large bins of canned goods and boxes of food to the Westside food bank. Also, Covenant of the Goddess, Pillars of Isis, Panpipes Occult store, and an OTO Lodge all had information tables and tell us they gave out a lot of information.

Nationally, there were 55 events that weekend spread between California, many midwest states, and the east coast.

Bottom line, I'd have to say we did very well given the limited preparation time (two months). See you at the 2000 event!
