Pagan Pride Day 2001 was on Saturday, October 20, from 10:00 am to 5 pm at Woodley park in Van Nuys. 600 People were in and out throughout the day! The event was postponed because of the tragedy of September 11. This postponement and coverage of the war caused us to get no press coverage of our event in 2001, but many other aspects of the event were as successful as 2000, including vendor sales (thanks for patronizing them) and the excellent musicians. Some things didn't work out as well, and they will be changed for next year.
We did, however, get press coverage for our healing vigil that we held in place of the event in its original scheduled date, September 15. Fox 11 news covered the healing vigil and the clip (along with a synopses of that event) will be posted here soon.
As far as activities for the day, rituals included an opening performed by Raven's Flight, a healing circle by Peggy Jentoft, a drum circle led by Star, Zo, Seadna, Randy, the main ritual by PPLA, and the closing performed by Ancient Keltic Church. Authors in attendance to sign copies of their books included Joni Abbatecola, Ellen Cannon Reed, Selene Silverwind, Jennifer Reif, and Denise Dumars. Workshops included trance induction by Rev. Marsha Smith, prayer beads by Lucy, astrology readings from Willow Lodge, a broom closet discussion by Oastara Kaye, and a meeting of a Pagan 12-step group. Performers included Celeste Alayne, Muzzle Loader, Zeora Sage, Hutch, Susan the Flamenco Dancer, Kali Mandir, and Babylon Mood. Also throughout the day we featured astrology charts produced by Willow Lodge, the always present children's activities, altar displays, and Goddess art displays.
We collected 300+ pounds of dry food for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Obviously from the name, they distribute food to the needy all over the county. Please visit http://www.lafightshunger.org/. We collected 170 Pounds of clothing and housewares for the families living at the Family Place, who are working to get back on their own, including pots, utensils, clothes, and toys. Remember -- we are Pagans and we care, even if some people don't think so. Reusing your stuff benefits the environment (less trash) and the poor families.
